2010 Cal Cup Team Captain
: Scott Willford, scott.williford@sbcglobal.net
Co-Captain
: Romeo Matias, romeojr619@aol.com
2010 Event Dates: October 2-3 (Sat/Sun), 2010
2010 Location: Barnes Tennis Center, 4490 West Point Loma Blvd, San Diego, CA 92107

We will begin accepting applications for Cal Cup on March 1, 2010.  It is a simple process – just  contact either captain, Scott Williford, at scott.williford@sbcglobal.net  or Romeo Matias at romeojr619@aol.com to express your interest.

The captains will regularly distribute the roster of interested players by email. Singles and Doubles Ladders may be used to encourage play and will be critical to Captains’ decisions on player rankings. The captains reserve the right to ask players (or doubles teams) to play one another in matches during the Cal Cup preparation period, March through September.

Player Requirements

This event, California Cup, was first hosted by San Diego in 1986 and was created to promote an annual competition between the top players in SDTF and its sister clubs in San Francisco (GLTF) and Los Angeles (LATA).  Each city organizes their top 24 singles players and top 12 doubles teams.  Therefore, we encourage only SDTF members, who considers themselves an “Open or A” level player, to try out for the team. All Cal Cup players must become an SDTF member by July 31, 2010.

Players will be expected to make a good faith effort to:

  • play matches as assigned
  • participate in team practices
  • support fundraising efforts
  • demonstrate camaraderie and sportsmanship

We highly suggest that player enter the SDO 25 (our July 4th weekend tournament), because those results could be an important factor in determining the rankings for the qualifier.

Singles Criteria

1. On May 1, the captains will announce the top 12 Cal Cup singles players. These spots are non-binding and do no guarantee a spot on the team. The goal is to roll a ranked ladder at this point to give players a chance to see where they initially may be ranked. The player list will be subject to review and revision on July 6.

2. On July 6, the top 18 Singles spots will be announced.

3. On July 29, the Cal Cup roster is closed. For those that are not in the top 18, we will confirm interest among remaining players in trying out for one of the remaining 6 spots.

4. If, at any time after July 6 and for any reason, one of these top 18 singles spots becomes vacant, the captains reserve the right to fill it at their discretion.

5. On or before July 30, we will announce the qualifier process for the last spots. The qualifier format will be determined by the captains based on the number of entries. Qualifying tournament matches may begin as early as July 31.

6. After the final 6 spots are filled, the captains will determine who will receive the next alternate spots in case of drop-outs among the top 24.

Doubles Criteria

1. On July 6, the captains will announce the top 8 Cal Cup doubles teams.

2. If, at any time after July 6 and for any reason, one of these top 8 doubles spots becomes vacant, the captains reserve the right to fill it at their discretion with any eligible alternate player or team.

3. The remaining 4 spots will be determined by the captains. Some form of ladder and/or qualifying tournament may be used to determine the last 4 spots.

4. Decisions on who receives one of the top 18 singles and 8 doubles spots will be based on match scores, tournament results, previous Cal Cup experience/performance, and any other tool or piece of relevant information available to the captains. These positions are not set in stone. The captains reserve the right to make changes, as necessary.
