  Join SDTF: SDTF Information
Established in 1983, the San Diego Tennis Federation began as a group of friends who wanted to organize tennis events specifically catering to the gay and lesbian community. Over the years, the Federation has slowly added events to fill its calendar year. We communicate with our membership primarily through email updates and the www.sdtf.org website.

Below are some events that have been held throughout the years:

Friday Night Doubles | Clinics | Sunday Promiscuous Doubles | Sweethearts Tournament |
Celebrity Team Tennis
| Singles Ladder | Singles League | Talent Show |
Bowl-a-thon
| San Diego Open
Friday Night Doubles The Balboa Tennis Club, our home courts, has been gracious enough to provide the SDTF with courts to hold this event most Friday nights of the year. The only Fridays it’s not held is when there’s a tournament in progress.

Members and prospective members gather between 6:00-6:45pm to sign up to play. Doubles teams are paired up and are assigned to courts at 7:00pm. They spend the next couple of hours playing a set against the other doubles teams.

You win a set, you move up a court. You lose a set, you move down a court. Play doesn’t usually end until the lights go out. Come to think of it, when the lights go out, maybe play is just beginning.
Clinics Jerry Sabio is a nurse, but it's not that type of clinic. Jerry is one of the SDTF's nicest and most giving members. He and a few of his friends put on a free tennis clinic for beginning to intermediate members or prospective members.

It's held at the San Diego High School courts from 8:30-10:30am on most Saturdays. The only time it's not held is if Jerry can't get out of another obligation or if it's raining. It's a great opportunity to learn some basic skills, as well as meet other members that are at the same level. We're proud to say that many of the clinic attendees now have tournament hardware (trophies) sitting on their shelves.
Sunday Promiscuous Doubles You will not need a doubles partner to participate in this fun SDTF social. This event is named accordingly because you will be playing with multiple doubles partner throughout the 2 hour period.

The concept is similar to Friday Night Doubles except with a fun twist. There will be 6 rounds of 20 minute matches. You will be assigned a doubles partner and court for the first round. If you and your partner win the round you will move up the chain, otherwise you move down. Once you move up or down the chain, you will switch partners and play the next round. You will continue this way for each round and the concept is to never play with the same player twice.

You will keep track of how many games you win and at the end of 6 rounds, the number of games you win will qualify you for fun and fabulous prizes. So, this is your chance to be as promiscuous as you want and be rewarded for it. How can you beat that?
Sweethearts Tournament With gay marriages so much in the news these days, Rancy Breece, our membership chair, thought it would be nice to start a Sweethearts Tournament scheduled around Valentines.

The format is round robin and at least half of the doubles couple has to be a SDTF member. Bonus points were given for the number of year's each couple has been together.
Celebrity Team Tennis 8 teams, 12 players per team, all levels, playing on Sundays between early February and early May. Includes a Draw Party to kick it off, as well as, an Awards Picnic to close it out. Teams select a theme and players give themselves an alias that fits that theme.
Singles Ladder Open to all members. Simply get on the ladder and start challenging players up to 6 spots above you. Oh and you'll have to defend your spot from the players below you on the ladder too.

Matches are scheduled at both players' convenience and are best 2 out of 3 sets. Scores are recorded, points are awarded, and money is given out to the top points leaders. It's broken into 3 periods between February 1 and November 30. This is one of those events where it's okay to step on someone else on your way to the top.
Singles League Open to all members. First come, first served. Can usually accommodate up to 18 players. The current league has already begun and is expected to run from February 1 until the end of May.

Prize money will be awarded at the end of the year Holiday Party. You play regular sets until time runs out. Ranking is based on total games won divided by total games played percentage.
Talent Show Started in 2002, the first SDTF Talent Show was a huge success. Held at Lips restaurant on 5th Ave., the price of admission included dinner and entertainment by our own Federation members. Approximately 100 members and friends attended the first Talent Show.

Email president@sdtf.org if you have a talent you would like to show off for all to see.
Bowl-a-thon Another annual fundraising tradition and another excuse for members to get together and kick it off of the tennis court. Details for this event will be provided when they are available.
San Diego Open This tournament is our club's pride and joy. Held over July 4th weekend, we usually get over 250 players from all across the country participating. We offer all levels of play. Festivities include a Draw Party, a Registration/Welcome Party, a First Night Gathering, and a Second Night Banquet.

The main draw Champions and Finalists, as well as the singles Consolation Champions, all walk away with trophies. Entry fees include a banquet, a t-shirt, and all the friends you can make.
