Between 1999 and 2002, the SDTF experienced tremendous growth. The membership base more than doubled from approximately 100 members to over 220. With this growth spurt, the club experienced unprecedented participation in its club events.
In 2002, CAL Cup was experiencing its 17th annual competition with its sister clubs in San Francisco and Los Angeles. As more and more new members learned of the CAL Cup format, they asked that a similar event be created addressing the players at the mid-level "B" division.
Andre Lalias, the 2002 SDTF President, worked with representatives from our sister clubs in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Seattle. Together, they created the Pacific Cup, "PAC Cup," competition. PAC Cup 1 was played in San Francisco, with the San Francisco team (GLTF) winning the 2002 title.
In 2005 San Diego became the first city to win the Cup two years in a row. The cup was lost to San Francisco at the 2006 PAC Cup event hosted by Seattle. There were a lot of close matches that decided the final winner. In 2007, Los Angeles took home the Cup in a narrow victory over San Francisco.
The competition is usually held the first weekend in October of every year. This year, Los Angeles will host PAC Cup 2008 on 26-28 SEP 08. The time has come to return Cup to San Diego-its rightful home. |
