In its early days, the San Diego Tennis Federation was a group of friends who got together in an informal setting to share their love of tennis. As the group grew, its members decided that more structure was needed. They instituted what has become known as the Grand Prix Ladder.
The ladder has served as a means of tracking the competitive hierarchy. While there is the competitive aspect to the ladder, our club forefathers also recognized that many players were only interested in the social aspect of the game. Thus, Grand Prix points were created. The points encourage members to get out and play, whether they care about their match results or not. The top three participants with the most Grand Prix points will be awarded on a trimester basis.
The Federation also recognizes the importance of competition and furthering one’s tennis skills through challenging each other. Moreover, SDTF would like to begin honoring those players who have excelled to the top. In addition to congratulating the top three Grand Prix point participants, the Federation would like to begin honoring the top eight-ranked players on the singles ladder by inviting them to the year’s end SDTF Grand Prix Master’s Cup Tournament in December. The winner of this tournament will receive a cash prize and the honor of keeping the Master’s Cup Trophy for an entire year before passing it along to the next year’s winner.
As the club grows and more events are offered, the Grand Prix Singles Ladder will continue to support those events. It will serve to bring the events together in a cohesive and fair manner. For instance, the CalCup team of 2007 will be based largely on the results and order of the singles ladder. The ladder chair also anticipates starting a doubles ladder in the near future that will also facilitate the selection of the doubles lineup.
By participating in the ladder, you will get to know lots of members of the Federation whom you may not otherwise have met, and hopefully make some new friends along the way. Furthermore, you will get to play every style of tennis imaginable, which might ultimately make you a better tennis player. |
